The guidelines for all CNA training programs are set and regulated by the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA 1987). Certified nursing assistant program providers are required to follow the said guidelines to make sure that graduates achieve the right set of quality training.

The training
Nursing assistant training programs aim to teach and provide students with the essential skills to properly care for patients. The programs are offered both on an online and campus-based setting including some high schools, local community colleges, vocational centers, technical colleges and on some 4-year colleges and universities.

General Requirements
In accordance with the requirements established under OBRA 1987, a certified nursing assistant training program should provide students at least 75 hours of training. Of the 75-hour training, 16 hours must be a practical hands-on experience.
The 16-hour practical training should be performed in a setting similar to that of an actual working environment.
This hands-on training, which should be supervised by either a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse, aims to expose students to the operations of the hospital or healthcare facility and give them first-hand work experience in a real-world setting.
The Administrators
CNA program training should be supervised and administered by a registered nurse with at least 2-year work experience as a nurse. Furthermore, the administrator should have taken at least 1 year of adult teaching course or an equivalent working experience that involves supervising people.
The Cost of a CNA Training Program
Various technical schools and community colleges offer certified nursing assistant program trainings at a very affordable cost. The cost may slightly vary depending on the state you’re in. The typical average cost of a 6-week CNA program ranges between $300 and $600.
Employment Prospects and CNA Salary Information
Students who are able to successfully complete the required number of CNA training hours and who are able to pass the competency exam can officially work as nursing aides in hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities.
