A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a trained medical professional who assists a Registered Nurse (RN) with his/her daily healthcare routine. A CNA’s primarily role is to look after the vital signs of the patient, give accurate documentation on their food and drink intake, prep the patients for a medical or surgical procedure, bathing and grooming of the patient.
Duties may also include keeping the patient’s room tidy and aiding in minor medical procedure. Even though CNAs are informed of the actual procedure that a nurse performs, their responsibilities are confined to observing a patient’s progress or deterioration and must report back to the nurses they are assigned to. They are mostly employed in hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and private home care providers.
